Tower Power

Let me first tell the story of the Tokyo Tower. It was a souvenir item gift to me by my Architect friend, Mae. She went to Japan for work assignment years ago. And of course, since I am always the favorite friend, I received  a “pasalubong” every time they come home. One of the items she gave me is a small replica of Tokyo tower. When I received it, I was confused. Sabi ko sa sarili, galing sya ng Japan, pero ang souvenir item ko “Eiffel Tower”? You see, the only tower I know then is Eiffel tower.

And then I showed the item to Joyce, my youngest sis who’s also an Engineer, who also went for Japan for 3 months work assignment. And she told me, “Ate, Tokyo tower iyan eh”. Kahit kaylan ang ate niya ang alam lang na tower eh Eiffel tower, hehehe. And that’s the only time I knew that it is called Tokyo tower.

All the pictures on this post, resembles one from the other right? But they are different, unique in their own ways. Two major differences, first is the location where they commonly got their name and second their purpose.

Tower power? They are huge, one can recognize them from a distance. They we’re built to withstood the test of time. And their purpose is very important to people’s lives. That’s why they have a certain power. Most are fabricated from steel.

Superman, Man of Steel is a fictional character, but there are people who are working with and on steel structures like the towers. Different may seem from each one but serving a noble purpose. They are the real heroes, the real Men and Women of Steel.

When Work Means Leaving Home

Everyone was called to do a mission. Salaries for professionals here in the Philippines are not enough to finance a kid in college. So parents applied for work abroad and endure being away from their family.  It takes a lot of sacrifice and will to hold on and wait. As they say money is hard to earn, easy to spend.

Few weeks ago, I’ve talked to a mother of a batch mate in high school. I asked her, “Uwi po ba sya this Christmas?” And she answered, “Makakauwi naman sya, naawa ako sa apo ko sa computer na lang sila nag uusap ng Papa nya.” For a Lola, seeing their Apo’s longing for a father is saddening. My father like some of the rest was an OFW. A father who has a great plan for his family.
Good thing there is technology. Way back our time, we rely on letters, postcards and voice tapes. Telephone lines were installed in Zambales on the year 1990s. That was the year when I was still in college. My father told me this story that he had to go out  and find a telephone booth on a negative 0 degree  Celsius temperature just to make a call.

This anecdote is Papa’s favorite. It happened when I was 4 year old. I still remember it though. It was a very memorable one. Papa left for abroad when I was still a baby so when he came back when I was four I don’t recognize him. I’d rather stay then in my Nanay/Yaya’s house than stay home. For a little girl it takes more than a picture. The children of today are a lot more blest than us way back then.

It had always been difficult to have the most important person of your life on the other side of the world. And it’s hurting more when people whom you consider as friend tend to take it a joke and would not understand such scenario. They cannot even understand why they invest on some businesses just to increase their cash flow. Blessed are you when your immediate family, your husband and your kid is just around after an 8 hour work. My challenge then, can you leave then for not just mere months but rather for a few years just to earn. Don’t you feel that longing, to be hugged and kissed? Try putting yourself  in our shoes.  We tend to judge them addicted to social network and the internet, but did you ever know that the internet is their only view deck outside of their work. My heart goes to them. And so it had always been my heart belongs to one among them.

Just Right for Sunset (full)

Holy Wednesday April 04 2012

I don’t know what got into me that I lighted the candle, prayed the rosary, and seeing that it was already 6pm I then prayed the Angelus. After praying I asked Papa where were the 4 kids, my tropa , and he said that they are in the port. So I brought my camera coz I know in a few minutes it will be sunset. When I reached the port the kids are not there, but then there’s the sunset. And here’s the picture I took that day.

At 6:05 PM

Sunset 1
Sunset 2

In just a few minutes life can change.

The sun disappears in the horizon

The original draft of this anecdote were written on a connected facebook wall. I directly wrote it then using my Samsung Galaxy Y phone, therefore I don’t have the draft for the said composition. Like what I have said on the first paragraph,  I really don’t know what got into me that day. The words I wrote, and of course it’s effect to the person to whom I wrote it. And he asked me a very difficult question, which at that time I really did not understand and shocked my senses.  But I did answer him, that if he thought that way, so be it. And so it does. And if the question can only be asked in the most simple way, the usual way, the answer is “Yes”. Not directly said but read between the lines, the answer is just right there and I know that he understood.

We haven't watched the sunset together, but most of our lives we have been looking at the same thing, in different time, on different horizons and on different vantage point. I thank God He gave me you. Deo Gratias!!!

Bee Honest

May 27, 2011

Honesty is such a lonely word, everyone is so untrue.
It is actually a lyrics from a song titled “Honesty”. During those times then, my routine activity every morning I wake up is checking my FB profile. And of course checking the news feed. I was engaged then to my fiancĂ© of 4 years. And seeing his comments had made me mad. Why? I knew him very well, and those comments he made was not like him. It was like seeing someone change right in front of your eyes.

September of the same year we broke up. And months after that, it was the only time I have noticed this college batchmate of mine. He posted this on his wall on the same date. He actually liked my one sentence wall post about honesty. Weird, isn’t it?

I asked Chona why would someone do it. And she said, “Ate, cheering squad, moral support.Nakikipag away ka eh.”
I am new then with the social networking site. Thus when I learned how it works, I imitated him. And indeed he is a good teacher. And I’ll ask now who started it all? Is it Him or Me? A twist of fate. Though it took me months, good thing I noticed, just right in time.
